FAQ

How much does it cost to open an account?
Generally there is no charge to open a personal account at Hilltop National Bank. For new customers a minimum initial deposit of $100 is required upon account opening and additional deposits may be required for certain account types or to purchase checks for the account. Please contact the Hilltop National Bank for additional details.

What do I need to bring with me when I open an account?
The USA PATRIOT Act requires banks to obtain, verify and record information that identifies each person who opens a new account. When you open an account (or add your name to an existing account), we will ask for your name, address, social security number, date of birth , and other identifying information including a valid photo ID. In addition to identifying information, we typically require an address verification (i.e. a piece of mail or correct address on ID) or employment verification and an initial deposit to open the account. For more information contact Hilltop National Bank.

What type of account is best for me?
For a better idea of which account is right for you, look at your average balances as well as the importance of receiving images of your checks. If you would like check images then the Snapshot or Premier Snapshot accounts are good candidates for you. If you do not need the images or you do not have a high average balance then the no charge account makes more sense. As always, if you would like additional help choosing an account, feel free to contact our Client Relationship Management Department.

How do I access the money in my account?
To obtain your money, you may make a withdrawal in person at any Hilltop location, use your Hilltop National Bank Visa debit card anywhere Visa is accepted, write a check, withdraw cash from any ATM or establish automatic withdrawals to pay bills. In addition, you may transfer funds between different accounts using our online banking system or by contacting Hilltop National Bank.

How do I reorder checks?

Is my money safe? How much FDIC coverage do I have?
The Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation or FDIC is a governmental agency that protects depositors against a loss in the unlikely event that a bank should fail. FDIC coverage limits vary depending on account ownership but generally each individual listed on an account receives $250,000 of total coverage at that institution (for all accounts that individual is on). Additionally, special regulations allow up to $250,000 in coverage for self directed retirement accounts (IRA’s).

For more specific information on FDIC coverage limits, visit the FDIC website at www.fdic.gov or contact Hilltop National Bank.

How do I add someone to my account?
Adding a signer to an existing account is as simple as revising the accounts signature card. The easiest way to accomplish this is to stop by any Hilltop location with all the current signers on the account as well as the individuals who are being added. If it is not possible for all signers to come to the bank together, please contact the Hilltop Client Relationship Management Department to make other arrangements.

How do I remove someone from my account?
There are 2 ways to remove an owner from an account. The first method involves closing the existing account and opening a new account with only the desired individuals as signers. The other method involves the individual who’s name is to be removed signing a release in front of a notary and the individuals remaining on the account signing a new signature card.

What do you offer for children?
Getting children off on the right path to financial security starts early. To encourage children to save Hilltop offers a unique savings account designed especially for children under 18 years old.

How can I save for retirement?
Hilltop offers a wide variety of Individual Retirement Account (IRA) options including traditional and Roth IRA’s. Contact Hilltop to schedule an appointment with one of our retirement account specialists today because it’s never too soon (or late) to start saving for the future.

What is a CD?
A CD or certificate of deposit is simply a special type of savings account. When you open a CD, you promise the bank that you won’t withdraw the funds deposited into that CD for a specific length of time (for example 3 months). In exchange for that promise, the bank pays you a higher rate of interest on your funds. For more information on CD’s contact the Hilltop Client Relationship Management Department.

How old do I have to be to have a checking account?
Whether you’re just starting a summer job or just want to begin learning about banking, it’s never too soon to open a Hilltop checking account. There is no age restriction on opening a Hilltop checking account. However, if you’re under 18 a parent or legal guardian will need to co-sign on the account with you.

How can I have overdraft protection on my account?
Hilltop offers 2 forms of overdraft protection for savings accounts. If you currently have a Hilltop savings account, that account can be “attached” to your checking account. In the event that there are not enough funds in your checking account to cover a debit from that account, we will transfer funds (in increments of $20) from your savings account to cover the debit. A fee of $5 applies to this type of transaction.

Hilltop also offers a Ready Reserve Line of Credit in amounts ranging from $500-$10,000. The funds available in the line of credit can be used to cover debits to your checking account or may be advanced into the account as needed. The balance in the line of credit is charged a nominal interest rate and monthly payments constitute 1/24 of the total ready reserve balance or $25, which ever is less.

To view our “Deposit Terms and Conditions” click here.

For more information on overdraft protection please contact the Hilltop Client Relationship Management Department.
